I had gotten this Oncidium Twinkle (White) from the local orchid society show last fall. It had many spikes and was starting to flower so I didn't want to touch it. Now that it finished flowering, I decided to repot it and check out how the roots were doing.
The potting medium was some black charcoal like stuff and it looks like it was packed in there pretty tight. I changed it out to my usual fir/bark/moss mix. The roots were brown so not the healthiest looking of roots but I did see new white root growth so yay!
I did find a couple of tiny pseudobulbs that I think was actually buried beneath the potting medium and one larger one that I am not quite sure what to make of it
First picture attached is the roots. Second picture attached is the pseudobulb. Do you think it's starting to rot?
i hope someone more knowledgable comes along to help. my two cents would be that 1. the roots look healthy and 2. it does look like its rotting but i don't know what you should do about it.
not much help i know : (
the bulb definitely doesn't look good. I would remove it asap especially if it's soft when you touch at that grey spot.
white roots look good...i would wash away all the remaining crap and take a look again/feel that everything has vigor and nothing is mushy.
Mushy = bad!
try washing it all and then take another pic and post
Thanks! If I'm going to be removing pseudobulbs, do I remove and apply cinnamon or a cinnamon paste to where I cut? Do I need to dip the guy in physan? Dealing with issues, it's new to me. They've either been alive and happy or near death/dead.
It does look like some kind of rot. When mine get old they just turn yellow and then take a while so I can finally pull them off. Does it look like it is extending to the other bulb?
I'm not sure what to do either, but maybe cutting it off would be the thing to do and yes then just apply some cinnamon powder to it. Perhaps someone with more knowledge will pipe up.
I ended up pulling off that bulb and a couple of really tiny ones that had been buried in the previous potting mix. That pseudobulb was starting to feel soft. Sprinkled up some cinnamon paste on it and repotted. Here's hoping! I'll try to remember to update in a bit.
I did see one of the newer pseudobulbs also had a brown spot in it. It didn't feel soft and squishy yet but I'll be keeping an eye on it
