Bought this from a seller online. Came like this. They are replacing but I get to keep this sad sack. What can I do to ensure it has a fighting chance of survival without getting diseased. Do I need to lop off bad parts? Please advise.

Do nothing. Let the leaves fall off if they want to fall off. Just provide what the orchid needs in terms of general requirements and pray that it makes it. If it doesn't, then you have a replacement on the way.

This advice is not sexy or cool, and that's ok by me. I'm not interested in snazzy. I'm interested in what works. And this is what has worked for some of my plants where there has been significant leaf damage due to either cool weather or heat, but where the plants are still alive. They eventually recover with proper care if they're strong enough, and if the damage wasn't so extensive that it dies shortly afterwards.

For those that die because the damage was too much for it to handle, well, (I quote the cartoon "G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero" for this one), "Now you know. And learning's half the battle."

I wish you well with your efforts to keep this orchid alive. I hope it makes it for you. And if it does, you have a story to tell.

For future online purchases in winter, have the seller hold the plant and ship when weather is warmer at your location & seller's location, or pay extra for better packing & shipping. Send Fedex or UPS and arrange to pick up from the shipping office, or deliver to a location where you know it will be delivered indoors.
