So what is "specimen size"? Female
Default So what is "specimen size"?

Hey everyone!!!

What does "specimen size" mean here in the orchid community? Does it mean the plant is just very large?

It seems to have to do with size. Is there a threshold for how big a specimen size plant needs to be (number of bulbs, etc)? Does it need to have a certain number of flower spikes?

Is it alliance dependent?

Thanks, everyone!!

Even miniature orchids can become specimens due to the amount of growths. A specimen orchid is what you get after many years without dividing.

Good question Astrid.
I don't think there is a precise answer.
But when somebody would tell 'specimen' to one of my plants, I'd be very proud :-)

I think "speciemen size" is when the plant has an age, a size, a health rarely seen in cultivation and in nature and could be taken as "example" of perfection or state of art of that species or hybrid.
For example I share 3 pics: an adult plant, a very big adult plant, a specimen plant (WOW!!). (pics and plants are property of the owners, just sharing here).
