Microscope selection

For your purposes, either one is fine.

I have a handheld microscope. The magnification is pretty decent, it is more than enough for your purposes. I was able to see each individual orchid seed with a decent amount of detail with this machine. Focus is somewhat shaky. It allows you to work hands-free, but you need an awesome stand for maximum mobility. The standard stand will not cut it if you need to get at strange or awkward angles. Some machines will not come with a driver for a Mac. So if you have a Mac, you might be a bit s.o.l going this route. Be mindful of the microscope driver's compatibility, especially if you upgrade your computer frequently. Photographic ability of these machines are akin to taking a photo with your cell phone. Don't expect clear, crisp photos, with nice depth of field. Cleaning the lens is not really straightforward. They are nice to have around, but they do have their limitations. (I was glad I got one and was able to use it for as long as I have, btw. I was able to see what I've always wanted to see. They're fun to play with.)

As for the jeweler's loupes. I recommend a 30x or 40x magnification. These are good for if you want an instant look at random. You don't have to wait for a load time. Just pick it up and use. They're also dirt cheap. Cleaning is relatively easy.

If you're serious about microscopy or micrography, invest in a $1,000 - $2,000 quality stereomicroscope/dissecting microscope with camera.
