Phal root or spike stalled.

I was excited to see my phal that I got for $5 doing very well upon looking at the new growth a couple weeks ago I scraped a piece of the root or spike nub. Since then it stopped growing . I does has a new leaf growing thou. I'm confused because it's hard to tell if it was a spike or root. I will post a picture later tonight.

What could have happened ?
