Heading to the Big Island and want to orchid shop!
I've brought orchids back from Kawamoto Orchids on Oahu and have had great luck. Have any of you been to the Big Island and shopped at orchid nurseries there and brought some home?
I posted this in the beginner forum because I feel I'm still in the beginning stages compared to some of you. I have maybe 30 orchids now and just moved most of them to a light table. I live in Montana and our short days in the winter never make them happy.

I have been to Akatsuka Orchids near Volcano National Park. I bought two Catt seedlings. I loved that they had big glass windows so you could see where they grow the seeds and seedlings. Yamamoto, where I had all my den nobles shipped from, is also very close by.

I have seen a lot of reviews for Akatsuka (even did a Yelp on it). Looks like I'll be stopping there for sure. I'll look for Yamamoto too! Thanks!
I'll be sure and post photos. I'm getting excited. Some of my favorite ones have come from Oahu so this island will be new to me.

I live in Kona on the Big Island. I second Akatsuka. They are not cheap, but very good plants, especially their cats. Carmela, on the other side of Hilo, is a very big wholesaler/retailer and very reasonable. It is so large you can get lost in it, and they have a wide variety. They are not open on weekends. Also, Orchid Works is near Carmela. They are a wholesaler of oncidiums, and I don't know if they take walk-in traffic. I have been to sales that they host yearly. I suggest calling them if you are interested. So - Welcome and aloha! I am sure you will have a great time here.

Volcano National Park is a must see.....travel around the island and enjoy the multiple ecosystems from large forests, coffee and macadamia nut farms, jungles, desert like with cactus, lava fields that are amazing, and of course beautiful vistas where you can often see whales off shore a bit when their blowholes give them away....and oh yeah....don't forget your "dirt shirt" :-)

Ah man I wish I could go back. I went there, well before my orchid days. Just after I graduated high school many moons ago. Loved it. Yes take many pictures and post so we can pretend we went. I remember seeing the orchids and so many beautiful plants and flowers. I picked a hibiscus (yellow) and put it in my hair.
I think going to the Big Island would be heavenly. Get some beautiful orchids.
Where in MT do you live?

Big Island is the home to many orchid growers, but as mentioned, many of them are huge in scale and won't let any visitors.
Regardless, have fun in Hawaii and shopping orchids!
