First ever rebloom - crazy mutant flower!
Default First ever rebloom - crazy mutant flower!

Hello OB,

I was so excited when last fall my Phal Surf Song decided to rebloom from the old spike. It produced two side spikes from the top two nodes and each have 2 buds. Well, the first bud just opened...and the flower is a crazy mutant! See attached picture, it looks like it has extra petals and is all-around misshapen. What a bummer. What could have caused that?? The original flowers on the SAME spike were perfectly normal!

Now I wonder if the remaining three buds will mature into the same craziness, or is this just one fluke? And in the future, if this Phal ever reblooms, will the flowers be normal?

If the rest of the buds open normally, then it is just one of those things that happens. In every living thing, a gene can be expressed incorrectly just due to some misstep in the normal biological process.
If other buds are also mutated, then it is usually caused by some outside influence (chemicals, superthrive, etc.)
