Lately, I have been putting an upside-down 2 inch orchid pot in the bottom of my pot, and put bark/charcoal on top and down around the sides. Basically, there is a large empty spot now in the bottom half of my orchid pots and it seems to help with more even drying of the media.

In other words, you are doing what I say, and planting them in a shallow pot. You can't buy a pot shallow enough, so you have to put a false bottom in. Then you can use a larger pot and let the roots spread out.

When I repot mine, I'll post photos.
