Help!! losing leaves
Default Help!! losing leaves

Hello all,

I'm hoping you can help me.
My grandad looked after orchids all his life and passed away 2 year. I have one of his moth orchids and last year it flowered happily and grew fine. The other day when I was wiping the leaves of dust. The leaves fell off. All the leaves are a deep (healthy) green but I have noticed that there was a black ring where the leave joins the plant. I am left with one leaf on it and wanting it to stay alive.
Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Unhealthy? What i can do? Very worried and any help is gratefully receieved.
Many thanks.

Can't imagine what happened there, but I do hope you can save it! Someone here will be able to tell you what you need to do.

Good luck!!

PS: Would probably help a lot if you could take some pictures of the plant... close up as possible to show the damage.

Oh no, it sounds like you may have gotten water in the crown of the plant and it has rotted. I have done this before. Yes if you post 4 more times then you can post pictures which would help us to help you.

Yeah that looks like crown rot. How do the roots look? If they are still healthy you might get a basal keiki from it.

The roots as still predominantly green from what I can see.
So what is a basal keiki? What do I do with it?

Thanks for teaching a newbie.

Since the rot has killed the original crown, a basal keiki is a new crown that grows from farther down the stem.
I would put some hydrogen peroxide on the rotted crown to help stop the rot, and after carefully drying it off put some cinnamon powder on there, being careful to not get any on the roots.
I am sure someone with more experience will be here to give you some advice.

Wait, wait and wait. That's about all you can do. Like Orchidgirl say's it may put out a basal keiki I have one doing it right now but it may take a very long time. So if you don't want to mess with it then I would suggest tossing it. If you want and try to save it then you will have to have patients.

I think it may need re-potting, not sure as I can't really tell from your pictures but it looks like the media is broken down. If it is I would re-pot.

Here is mine growing it's keiki.

I definately want to try and save it. If I have got this right I should get some 3% hydrogen peroxide to kill the rot. Once clean use cinnamon pounder to help increase likely good of a basal keiki, and re pot with fresh medium.

And most importantly wait.
Thanks for all your help.
