Are most of the roots firm? Or are they squishy and papery?

The roots are firm. Some felt a little dry

I think then your suspicions that it needs more water are correct. I would say keep an eye on it as it should recover with more frequent watering. Of course don't drown the thing but see how long it really takes for it to dry out. And maybe do some more research on the best care for this guy as I'm not familiar with it.
