Dried buds on Neostylis Pinkie 'Starry Night'
Default Dried buds on Neostylis Pinkie 'Starry Night'

I don't know what happened. Plant looks great with no signs of distress. It is grown in a small clay pot with open slits. Some roots are growing outside the pot and the tips are covered over so I didn't want to overwater. I live in Ohio and the heat has been on in sunroom but I do have a small humidifier going and the humidy is approx. 40 per cent. I am so sad over this. Will I have to wait until next Jan. before I see a flower?

Drying buds can be from insufficient watering, insufficient humidity, or mites. Do you see any micro webs?

No. My plant is beautiful !!! That is why I am so confused. It is probably lack of humidity. Will it try to bloom again?

Mine arrived with the beginning of a bud back in September, and not much has happened. My plant, also, looks very healthy and happy. I did notice another bud forming yesterday. Since I'm a newbie, I don't know if the flower is that slow in blooming, or if it is a lost cause. I sympathize with you!

Yes mine also started early and there was a second spike so the plant must be healthy just too dry. I had another vanda do a similar thing in the summer but it was not nearly as hardy. It is so disappointing to get to that point and fail. Good luck to you!

Thanks! Same to you. I was under the impression they liked less water in winter, so I cut back in November. Was I supposed to water the same all year?

Would not want to post a wrong answer. I live in Ohio and the furnace runs constantly in cold weather, but I would say that if they are resting maybe water less ,but we will leave this to a senior member who might live in your part of the country.

I get quite a few aborted spikes on both Pinky and Lou Sneary - the very odd part is that if there are multiple spikes, I may get one or two that develop normally and go on to bloom, and one dries up pretty early on, so it doesn't seem to be a cultural issue (at least in my case).

I water mine the same year-round - they are watered less often in winter because the media dries more slowly for me then.

Thanks so much . What bothers me the most is that I've had no problems with it in the past few years so I wonder what I did wrong. I should be more happy with my successes and not dwell on my errors and I will be more attentive next year.

My Pinky 'Starry Night' has aborted the spike in the past two three years.
It was due to insufficient water. The plant was mounted. I had hard time keeping the plant well hydrated that way indoor.
I was too lazy to make a change (potting up) but I finally did about one year ago, and now it is spiking again with two spikes!
so far, no blasting but super slowly developing.
