Default Help needed for cultivating a Dendrobium Nobile in Mediterranean weather

Dear Orchid lovers,

I have had in the past 2 Phalaenopsis and they both died. I never know how to cultivate them properly.

Anyway my boyfriend got me this Dendrobium in summer 2014 and it was full of flowers. I placed it on a closed glassed balcony with shutters that I keep open. Of course after a while all the flowers fell and I kept watering it once a week up until now. What's happening now is that I have lots of new branches growing they're all still small and very green. And I don't know if it's normal to have so many at a time.

I also would like to know when I will be able to get new flowers?

Has anyone ever successfully cultivated a dendrobium in this region?

Do you advise me to keep it indoor or outdoor?
Knowing that summer temps can easily reach 32 degrees Celsius during summer days and can go as low as 4 degrees on winter nights.

Welcome!

Do you know the name of your orchid?

If it is getting little branches on the canes they are probably (hopefully) flower buds. They could be keikis also.

I live in a similar climate. I cut back on the water and don't fertilize my nobile dendrobiums in the winter.
I give them lots of light and cooler temps. In summer they get more water and warmth.

Send pictures if you can.

Maureen

Welcome to your first post.
A picture would be helpful.
The temperature is not a problem for nobile. In cold nights you can take it indoors. Nobile needs a cooler and dryer winter rest.
You can also try Dendrobium kingianum.

Your climate would be similar to part of California?
Dry hot summer and wet cold (but not freezing) winter, right?

Temperatuer wise, perfect! You just want to protect your plant from the winter rain as it might ruin the plant.

As mentioned above, cold (you said down to 4C) is not an issue as long as it is not freezing, and actually beneficial in bringing the best flowering, so you will love your plant in bloom next spring!

They can take full sun, but in the dry hot climate, they may burn.
Leave them out and watch the leaves. If there is burn, then give it some shade, but they need strong light to do best.

Once the weather gets cold, make sure it is not exposed to too much rain.
You still have to water the plant during the winter, but not very much. As long as the canes (the plant stem) look plump, it is fine.

During the summer growing season, water a lot!

All my nobile hybrids are in bloom or budding at the moment. I love them!

Happy Growing!

I live in San Jose, California - and our climate is considered "Mediterranean"- a few nights in winter will get down to, or just below freezing. Summer days are very warm - hot (30 - 35 C generally- occasionally hotter), cooling quite a bit at night. Nobile can be grown outdoors year-round here, avoiding direct hot mid-day and afternoon sun in summer; protected from frost, freeze, and rain in winter.

Default Thank you all

Thank you all for your replies

Yes my dendrobium is a nobile @nutgirl.

I will post a picture as soon as i get home @euplusia

I think it is still growing new canes, they are not keikis or flower buds

This is the reason why I wrote. I read everywhere that I am supposed to have flower buds now but I don't

Apparently Lebanese weather is comparable to the one in south california @NYCorchidman

I will try putting it on my open balcony and see if any changes occur

Sometimes when you get a plant that has been grown in a greenhouse environment, it has to establish a new growing routine based on its new climate and situation. Yours may skip a season while it sorts things out.
It appears to be growing new canes at the base so that is good. More canes more flowers.

Are you sure it is a nobile type Dendrobium? Were the flowers growing up and down directly from the cane or on stems from the top of the cane? Just asking to be sure.

(Beautiful view from you window)
