Yep, that's the problem I have. I lost one of my favorite (named) Phals last year, and it's proving extremely difficult to locate a replacement... It's a hybrid which was available everywhere at a certain point, and now no vendor has it

I hope you find it!
I think that many vendors buy orchids from the same place where they are being mass produced, then resell them. These places will clone a ton of the orchid at one time, grow them to a certain stage, then sell them. The market is flooded with the orchid for a year or a few years and, when they are all sold, they disappear. Hopefully, you will be able to find one that is being resold by someone or a smaller vendor will decide to make a clone of it.

I hope so... It's Phal Fantasy Musick, the sister cross to Phal Mini Mark. Looks the same but the lip and spotting is pink instead of orange/yellow.

Camille and Leafmite- I have a hybrid Dendrobium from Hawaii that I got on my Honeymoon and it is mad at me and trying to die, of course I can't find it anywhere so I am hoping that it will come around. It was called a Burana Prince and is purple and white...sigh....

While it is ideal to have an accurate name tag, you don't need one to grow or enjoy a plant. I've also entered and seen other folks enter a NOID plant in our society orchids show. I have a NOID Catt that was given to me. I was encouraged to enter it in the Cattleya hybrid purple/lavender class. It got a third and more importantly filled a blank space in the society display which took a blue among the "displays" entries.
Also, you can have some fun with names. Another society member entered a lovely, robust Cymbidium....named Trader Joe. >; -) It got a ribbon too.
Happy growing to all

Personally, I understand the usefulness of proper naming for identifying certain hybrids or varieties, but see the value in growing attractive noids, and of being proud of these plants and wanting to show them off, or even give them a name of your own.
What I wonder is why we don't use "noid" as a sort of naming prefix for these plants, to indicate that their genetic heritage is unknown, but to "include them in the discussion" so to speak.
So for example, your favorite noid phal could become Noid Phalaenopsis 'Gravelsack', or your intergeneric oncid could be named as Noid Oncid. 'OrchidBoard'.
Just something I had been thinking about with regards to naming.

SPACE - eventually every orchid collector runs out of space. If you really love your NOIDs but are not thrilled with your named varieties, then keep what you love.
Maryanne not every orchid club holding an AOS show will have a class for unnamed orchids. It is up to the club to make that decision.

Another reason I have heard is that some genera have such wide discrepancies in growing preferences, like oncidiums. So for example, Tolumnia are in the oncidium family, but they like to dry out a lot more than say, a Miltonia. Sometimes it helps to know the ancestry of the plant to help figure out what conditions it likes. But that could be really nit-picky haha.
I got a tip from someone else on the board, I don't remember who...but they use "Noidus" as the species name! And then you can either make up the name, or use the name of what you think it is. So I have a NOID Onc. I got from Trader Joe's that now reads "Onc. Noidus 'Tsiku Marguerite'" because I think that's what it is, but honestly I have no way of knowing!

I do have a lot of NoIds myself, but the reason I like my named ones is for comparison reasons. when should I expect blooms? Are the blooms supposed to look this floppy, like the sleeve of wizard??????
