Some of the leaves on my plant are single while others are double. Most of the sheaths have come from the double leaves but now I'm noticing what might be a single with a sheath. This year thanks to the board I had an earlier bloom and now c. Puppy Love is still in bloom from early Dec. How should you handle new growths in winter when some cattleyas are somewhat dormant?

Among Lc. Puppy Love ancestors, C. trianae is monfoliate, C. harrisoniana is bifoliate or sometimes trifoliate, L. anceps is usually monofoliate but bifoliate isn't too uncommon. I'm not surprised at all if Puppy Love is inconsistent in leaf number.

Like leaf number, your plant gets conflicting instructions from genes from various ancestors for seasonal growth and blooming. Leaf number might coordinate with the ancestor that is driving the growth cycle in that season. In spring and summer, and any other time it is in flower or in active growth give it conditions to support active growth. If it isn't in active growth you can cut back somewhat on water and fertilizer in the cooler darker days of winter. The only time I would consider 'forcing' it to a seasonal pattern is if it consistently grew well but didn't flower. Then it might need some kind of seasonal push.

Thanks so much. How would you repot and when? Would I need to be as careful as I would with a biofoliate..

After observing your plant through a few growth cycles you probably know at what stage of growth you start to see new roots. Repot at the first sign of new roots, or just before if you know when it will be, is almost always ideal for any Catt. If it happens to be spring too that is perfect, but root growth is really what drives the timing. L. anceps can really sulk if you repot at the wrong time, but a flush of new roots gives the best chance to get settled in fast and easy. Nothing tricky about it other than that.

Thanks again ! It is by far one of my favorites so I will be careful to keep a watchful eye on it.
