Mushrooms- good or bad? Female
Default Mushrooms- good or bad?

Hello-
I was surprised by this mushroom growing out of the bottom of my Laelia Finckeniana's plastic pot. I am a windowsill grower, temps are 70F and I am running a humidifier some to help offset with the dry heat in the house.

So is this mushroom a good witch or a bad witch?

Thanks for everyone's opinions. I have read different things about fungus growing in the orchid pots and the answers are all over the "board".

I've had a couple of different types - the most impressive being a bright yellow and the most depressing being like a sludge. I have just removed them, with no ill effects to man or beast. Make sure you remove that one before it produces spores.....

I don't think the mushroom poses any threat in and of itself, but it is indicative of a constant high moisture level, which isn't good for a Laelia.

I had a couple pop out of a piece of driftwood that one of my bulbos is mounted to. I decided not to worry about it, but bulbos like it on the wet side.

Those mushrooms look like they might be edible! Don't try to eat them, though.

I agree with Subrosa - your medium is too wet. I would repot into lava rock, it dries out very quickly. The mushrooms aren't harmful per se, but they accelerate the breakdown of bark and other organic media. They don't affect living plants, only dead ones.
