Baby Den Roots Female
Default Baby Den Roots

Last year at my first Orchid Society meeting, I ended up with a cute little Dendrobium nobile.

A while later, I was poking around in the pot and noticed that one cane was dead at the base.

I cut off the dead part and planted the cane in a pot of sphagnum to see what it would do. It eventually developed two keikis, one before the other.

They slowly grew over the summer, but after I took the plants inside for the cold weather, I got kind of neglectful and the cane eventually died, along with the smaller keiki, and I decided it was time to separate the bigger one, since it couldn't have been getting any benefit from being attached to a dead thing.

soak the roots for a few minutes to hydrate them, then pot it up in your favorite medium and it should do fine as long as your care is suitable

I recommend using a clear 2" pot. I also recommend using medium grade bark.

Congratulations on the keiki, btw.

Yes, put in the smallest pot possible. Personally, I'd use fairly moisture retentive media (fine bark, or chc, or sphag if you do ok growing in it)being that small pots dry quickly, and this is so small. I prefer those for Dens anyway, but medium bark is also a good choice, just will need more frequent watering, especially until it has aged.
