Rescued Cantabrigia
Default Rescued Cantabrigia

This little fellow was given to me this summer at the garden centre, because they figured it was as good as dead. All it had was one leaf and three p-bulbs, yellow and on the way out. It did tho have one tiny green shoot.

It had no roots, and rather than put it in sphag, I tried putting it in medium bark with a small twist of spag that I hoped would just hold enough water to encourage root formation.

It was given no special treatment and was watered just like all the rest, and allowed to dry well out every time.

OK, the spike only has two flowers, but I hope after a year's good growing, next year it will look a bit better.

The point is, this plant is pulling thru with no pampering, despite being as nearly dead as it is possible IMO.

Good job. Recovery can be long and drawn out. Sometimes you just have to do your best, sit back and wait....patiently...

What is the full name of this plant? Googling "Cantabrigia orchid" is getting me nothing. Thanks!

Duh, my brain had obviously crossed a wire. It's Cambria.
Sorry about that.

× Cambria - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cambria is a commercial name for intergeneric hybrids among the following genera of orchids, belonging to the Orchidaceae family, Epidendroideae subfamily, Cymbidieaetribe,Oncidiinae subtribe:

Odontoglossum, Kunth 1816
Oncidium, Sw.
Miltonia, Lindl. 1837
Cochlioda, Lindl. 1853
Brassia, R. Br. 1813
The first orchid hybrid among Odontoglossum crispum x Miltonia x Cochlioda noetzliana was obtained in 1911 by Mr. Charles Vuylsteke and was called Vuylstekeara in his honor. About ten years later by crossbreeding Vuylstekeara and Odontoglossum Clonius appeared Vuylstekeara Cambria Plush, awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society and by the American Orchid Society. From that moment many spectacular hybrids have been created and the Cambria term is nowadays used for a large group of hybrid orchids with beautiful spotted and brightly coloured flowers.

Sometimes, the best way to get an orchid to recover, is to leave it well alone (i.e. no pampering after it has been pruned and repotted, no keeping pulling it out of the pot to check etc). I know this because I've been guilty of almost killing some by smothering them...
