Well, ...I'm afraid my first posting here is off to an inauspicious start. My apologies to everyone for my mistake.

The leaf is, in fact, a fallen leaf that was "stuck" onto the phal leaf. In my defense, it was stuck really well though, and was not removed by water spray, nor by lifting the tip of it with my finger. Once I realized that non one had seen anything like I was describing I looked a little more carefully - and pulled a little harder.

I really do feel a bit of an idiot (maybe more than a bit) and I am so very sorry. :/

Thank you CA2L ... 'kinda fun and intriguing', you mean like those grainy photos of "Nessie" or "Sasquatch"? I guess that was why I felt so bad after I'd realized my mistake.

Nothing to be ashamed of, people are nice here Last year I posted about trying to stake a Phal spike that was about two inches tall, I'm sure everyone was rolling their eyes at me but they still tried to help!

You mean you DON'T stake a new spike? Seriously, I've tried it...when I had a new spike growing under a leaf and pressed up against it. I was afraid the tip of the newly growing spike would somehow be adversely affected by the contact/moisture? So, I took some rubber coated wire and looped it around the small spike and "gently" anchored it so as to hold the spike out from under the leaf. I removed it as soon as the spike had grown beyond the edge of the leaf with no harm done. Probably unnecessary, but it didn't hurt

Some mystery plant indeed...the leaf that was stuck was a small leaf from an overhanging night blooming jasmine Call me crazy, but after I'd realized I DIDN'T have some weird natural occurrence going on I began to wonder what would happen if one made a tiny incision in a growing leaf and dabbed a little keiki paste or some other rooting hormone compound on it ... probably nothing - or something disastrously bad I'm guessing - but the thought crossed my mind
