Well can i jump in and ask the same question? The point of mine is not a point or a mitten.
I think this is a spike. It's color and surface texture is darker and smoother than a root. Roots usually have a bright green tip and silver body. This is also very straight and has a few ridges at the top. Congrats!
This last pic sure looks like a spike to me. Also, I've noticed that a spike will always come in parallel on the stem with the leaves, whereas roots will sprout through anywhere on the stem, so if you see a nub that's not parallel with leaves you can be pretty sure it's a root and not a spike. That said, I'm relatively new, but it's been a consistent observation so far. Good growing!
