Hwra. Lava Burst spike trapped--no new flowers? Female
Default Hwra. Lava Burst spike trapped--no new flowers?

I was so excited when I found a spike on my new Hwra. Lava Burst 'Pacific Sunrise.' I love the blooms on this one, and I couldn't wait to see them!

But the spike was trapped inside a leaf and seemed to be starting to grow in a spiral down in there. There were also buds starting to develop. So, in what may have been poor judgment, I took a toothpick and geeeently pried it out. The first bud broke a bit. I had to do it again a few days later (which was yesterday) and now, the other bud fell off. Now it looks like this

I'm not clear on how the spikes grow on these--was it damaged too badly to continue growing? No new flowers for me?
Also, this is in retrospect, but did I do the right thing in teasing out the spike?

Or you could remove the outer leaf. I tend to break the spikes when trying to help them so I am definitely not good for advice. :|

Yeah, I've also learned to not try to "pry" trapped spikes ...

Bummer! I tried to be really gentle. It's still a pretty small plant--only 2 pbs, so I didn't want to cut into a leaf.

Ah well, I've heard these guys are free-flowering, so hopefully I will get more flowers in the future

I get this on my Oncidiums sometimes, too. I have often seen these at shows and they do really put on a nice display. It is disappointing to lose the flowers but there is always next time.
