Dendrobium loddigesii winter rest
Default Dendrobium loddigesii winter rest

I've been told to stop watering my Den loddigesii from Halloween to Valentine's Day, and only spray it if the canes begin to shrivel. I know it is supposed to lose it's leaves, and it has lost a few so far.

But I've been going though pictures of this plant on google and I've noticed that almost all of the plants with blooms have almost all of their leaves left.

Is it supposed to lose all of it's leaves? I'm confused if I should be watering mine more or not, to retain some of the leaves.

Hi Kristin, I don't give this species a hard dry spell and it grows and blooms fine without losing all its leaves each year. I suspect the bloom cue is some combination of cooler temps and dryness, where plants kept warmer need to be a little drier for whichever triggering hormones to reach sufficient concentration at bud sites.
