Do you guys ever get strange looks when buying orchids?

I may have gotten a few odd looks but eh, it happens no matter where I am. I guess I buy weird stuff?

But the one time I did get a comment from a stranger was from a fellow grower, and she made me angry >:-(
I was in the clearance section at my grocery store and picked out a nice phal that had just finished blooming but the roots were fantastic. She looks over at me and says, "I hope you know what you're doing." I could just look back at her in shock and she just "tsk's tsk's" me and shakes her head and walks away. I wanted to tell her that I have 15 more at home...but that really made me angry :-/ I took the stupid plant home and it's thrived ever since.

I have gotten comments from people saying "I wish I could grow them but they just die".

When I found my Paph I was waiting in line with it. A lady stopped and was so excited to see it. I thought she was going to grab it out of my hands. When I told her it was the last one she walked away sad.

So no nothing really weird has happen to me but I only buy one at a time.

I have only gotten looks of jealous and/or admiration while carrying orchids in bloom on the street or in the subway train.

Sometimes people compliment or start asking questions. where did you get it? do you sell them? are they tough to grow?

I guess orchids make for great conversation piece. haha

Deb and les have the best range for especially vanda.

Also take the time to visit cairns orchid centre at clifton beach. Nice range of catts and dendrobium.

Since I buy 99.9% of my orchids online, I get no weird looks, and since my only companions are my two cats, no funny looks at home either. My friend do give me looks whenever I tell her I've ordered more orchids, though...

However, once a year, there's an orchid show at my local flower shop (that's where I got my Phrag. Sunset Glow, last year). When I'm around orchids, I get very enthusiastic and when I get enthusiastic, I talk a mile a minute at anyone willing (or unwilling, I'm not picky) to listen. So, after complaining how they've managed to print the wrong pictures in the pamphlets, running around, loudly commenting on the quality of the plants, I somehow ended up getting people asking me how to care for their orchids and which they should pick. The funny thing is, I know nothing about other orchids except the few genera I grow myself, and I'm not that great at growing them either...


Oh, and I think most people in my neighborhood have figured out I'm weird already, so I don't know if an orchid or two would raise any eyebrows.

When I started buying orchids 'n was about 10 and most of the people gave strange looks at this joung kid buying about 10 orchids worth a R1000. But now 3 years later most of the people there know me, and call me there youngest grower. The orchidwiz there, usually gives me 20% discount for non flowering orchids.

Thanks, it all started when my mother got a orchid present and I always forgot what we called it, orchid. So I looked up on how to grow them and started my collection. I was always fond of plants and now I have my own orchid greenhouse. Today I almost spent 2 hours repotting my Psychosis trying to remove all the sticky old spagnum mos and planting it into a fresh bark mix.

I spent like 30 min picking out my orchid last time in a supermarket. Didn't notice any strange looks but heck I don't care
