The most I've ever bought is three orchids, I'd probably be staring enviously at someone who bought 10. Nursery people don't seem to notice me, once I even had the sprinklers turned on me.

Not something that is likely to ever catch on with the populace at large --- takes more work and freezer space than most folks can or are willing to commit to. Too bad as I have heard that for cats (and now dogs) it is much healthier. Then too there is the "squeamish factor" with most folks to consider. I keep the plastic bags w/ my frozen mice bagged in paper bags so that -- on those rare occasions when family visits -- they don't get weirded out by the "corpse-icles". (I have snakes.)

I would suggest you Google for Indiana Orchid Shows. There are several in your state. While all shows are not created equal, I would bet there are at least a couple goods ones though they might necessitate some driving. (I've done 2hr sojourns to some shows in my state.)

I've noticed that at a number of greenhouses/nurseries I've been to over the years (not just orchid places). A friend of mine who worked for a couple greenhouses years back cited that "attitude" amongst his coworkers and the various growers he came in contact with as one of the things he found very dissatisfying with the job. Not to say everyone in the industry is like that -- I've met a number of nice social types -- but there does seem to be a lot at the more distant opposite end of the spectrum.

I only get 'the look' at home. However, once your colection numbers in the high 3 digits, the non-botanical spouse does not really notice the additions. It is just an issue of getting them into the house without being noticed.

I usually end up giving a class on phals 101 every time I am looking at orchids in the store. The local stores here only have phals and as soon as someone starts asking I end up explaining as much beginner info as I can to save the plant.

Oh Paul, I hear ya. It took me a while to get there. Well just this morning I cut up a cow tongue, yuk. I use to have to have dear hubby do it but I decided I had to toughen up I don't blame anyone for not doing it. I have 2 dogs with allergies, one very bad so it was a must.
See I'm not the only one with carcasses in my freezer or I should say freezers I'm glad there are so many here that feed this way.
I have one that eats both and of course it is the expensive stuff just like RamdonGemini. I do think I spend less on the raw as I can get allot from the local meat plant.
Now back to orchids. I wish I had a nice big greenhouse filled with orchids to go look at, I'm jealous of you all that have such places to go. But there is the good old internet so away I go with my addiction. It's a dangerous thing

I missed the portion of this thread that had to do with the raw feedings. I butchered 8 deer so far this year. 3 for friends and the rest for us. We live on venison. The inside dogs get some. Too much and they get sick. The shepherd lives on venison carcass in the fall and winter and he is beyond healthy and has a gorgeous coat. The little dogs do get to chew on the bones.

There are prepackaged raw diets now. Takes the guess work out of making sure you have provided the appropriate amount of organ and bone meal. I looked into it for my cat, but he suffers from what my vet thinks could be pancreatitis and can only have turkey and duck for proteins and a lot of the pre-packaged raw meals also include chicken or lamb.
