When I was at Seattle Orchid last time, I walked in and told the guy at the counter I was going to need a box. A gal that was in there just browsing turned and stared at me. I got maybe 10 plants? They were all miniatures too, for my terrarium.
Every time I leave TJs with more than one orchid, people look at me like I'm crazy.

I will say that on my most recent trip to Carter & Holmes, I had a nice chat with the folks at their front office. After our chat, I was handed off to one of their other staff for assistance in finding plants, with the comment ". . . he's a grower". I was certainly not a big customer, but got great customer service!

I think that because it was open house they were too slammed to individually help everyone out so I didn't get assistance in finding plants. I asked where I could find the floofiest Catt they had, and got pointed in the right direction. Their plants are all absolutely beautiful though!

People can be so weird and tactless. It doesn't even sound like you had that huge of a purchase.
It kind of sounds like the woman was jealous that you are a good grower...

Decades back when I worked in an hospital there was a famous big orchid nursery nearby. They produced Cymbidiums for the cut flower market and Phalaenopsis hybrids at a time when it was an economic success. They tried hard to cross yellow Phalaenopsis, when the first good yellow plants were sold for 1000 $ from overseas. They also had beautiful Cattleya hybrids, some of them from Vacherot&Lecoufle.
Sometimes after my night shift I roamed through their greenhouses and eventually bought me an orchid.
The first plant I bought there was a dark brown Catasetum integerrimum. The nurseryman stared at me flabbergasted. He never understood why on earth I choose this weird Catasetum and not one of his beautiful Cattleya hybrids, a ladyslipper or a Paphi.
And my second plant from this nursery was Lycaste linguella.
Don't know how many plants I'd bring home if I had the chance to visit Carter&Holmes.

Haha this totally reminds me of the time when I purchased some orchids at trader joes, the cashier wished me a romantic dinner. Uh, thanks, I'm single and I'm just buying flowers for myself lol

I get my water from a small river near my house and use a public path to get there. People always look at me funny carrying multiple water jugs with me on my walk. When I tell them its for my orchids an carnivorous plants they look at me even more weird. Jack

Ah, the CP's. If my bulbos prove to attract flies, maybe I should put my pitchers and venus fly traps near them....

The new chids great! I have had that happen examining all the orchids at Lowe's clearance before.
The greenhouse I frequent they are very nice and they actually try to sell me more with their new shipments!

You guys that actually have stores to go to for orchids are so LUCKY. We have nothing around here to see but Phals. There is nowhere within 200 miles or more to find an orchid nursery or even a garden center that has orchids unless you just want to keep getting Phals from Home Depot or Price chopper.
