New leaf growing within a new leaf?
Default New leaf growing within a new leaf?

Hey everyone!

I haven't seen this before, maybe you could help. One of my phals put out a new leaf, and it grew a couple inches.. today I see that there is a new leaf growing from that new leaf... does that mean the first new leaf stopped growing? So weird!

If you mean that there is a new leaf coming from the crown of the phal, then this is normal. I have had phals that start a new leaf before they are finished with the last. It just means that they are really happy.

Yes sorry, that is what I meant. Ahhh that's good to know! I thought the leaf may have stopped growing and decided to put a new one out.

I haven't seen that but one of mine aborted a new leaf when it started to grow a spike. I'm still waiting on another new leaf though.

I've also had this happen but for me it happened with a less than happy plant. But I don't think it's a problem, assuming everything else looks good!

This recently happened to me as well on a thriving, well-established phal. It got a new leaf, and when the leaf was about 5.5" long, it started growing a second new leaf. The first leaf remains about 6" long, so it only grew about 0.5" since the second new leaf showed up, and it's somewhat smaller than the other leaves, but not by much. Now the same phal is also growing offshoot spikes from both old spikes, so I wouldn't be surprised if the second new leaf ends up even smaller in size.
