Hi everyone! I am hoping some of you can shed light on this funky new growth. I've had this one for about 4 months and have had two new growths develop on my watch. One growth is normal, the other is growing crooked.

Check out the pics of the normal growth and the impostor.

Oh yeah, when is this thing going to bloom for me?

I have had this clone for a few years and have never seen any growths do this. I wonder if the seasonal movement of the sun southward may be causing the new growth to "reach" for the light? What do you think? Oh, and your plant looks like it is pretty much blooming size, so I would expect one of the next couple of growths to bloom in the next year if you give it enough light, etc. Good luck!

Oh! And check on that black at the base of the newest pseudobulb. If you peel that covering back you will be able to see if the bulb itself has rot or if it's just the papery covering drying up.

Thanks Gage. I forgot to take a pic of the second normal growth that's somewhat shown blocked by the tag. They started at the same time.

To your point of following the sun, the pot gets turned around when I water it so I don't know why that didn't affect the other pb. Oh well! Yes, my growth looks like one of those bamboo plants twisted.

I will check for rot as you suggested but I am pretty sure it's just the sheath drying up.

Just to follow up on the black sheath. It was only that... And when I peeled it back, saw a bright green eye forming!

...leaning over new bulbs... I'm thinking are a result of being under-watered during its growth stage before it hardened. (I tie them up when they are tender and yours are very soft still). There wasnt enough water to fill the cells structure as the stalk grew out. It eventually collapsed under its own weight. If the cells are taking in water as they should stalks should be erect and turgid as should the leaves be. Catts will grow sloppy sometimes but your other bulbs look fine...doesnt seem like it has the sloppy catt syndrome at all

my

P.S.

If you stake it up and give it a new direction to grow, it will harden up over time and you can straighten it out. I use my net scrunchys just for this

Interesting thread and following information. I've got several plants with this "condition". That is helpful to know that underwatering could be a factor, especially since other plants have very shriveled bulbs that tell me I am every so guilty of this.

now one comes and asked how can over-watering have the same effect? Its very important while people are learning not to give them too much info to run with. Just enough to digest it, give them time to understand and then want more info.

heres more

over watering causes the cells to explode from internal pressure(turgor pressure) not bec the cell walls are limited by the water they can take up.

The cell which is full has now burst from internal turgor pressure and the bulb starts to fail (leaning over). Soon after this over watering 'condition' you will see rot at the base of the bulb(bulb rot). That's how you can tell the difference from under and over water. Under watering doesn't destroy the cell walls only leaves them thirsty. It will eventually lead to a slow death if not taken care of. Over watering does destroy the cell walls and its a usually a quick ending for an orchid......
