What does one do with the old and flowered Dendrobium canes? They won't flower again, will they? Last seasons canes have dropped most of the yellow leaves but I have noticed little budlings coming out on the opposite side. Are those flowerbuds or new leaves.:

It's not easy to tell from your description, please post pics.

In the meantime, don't discard anything.

Many Dens can bloom from previously bloomed canes - and even if they didn't, those canes support the plant with their roots and stored food.

The plant will cast off old canes itself. It sounds like you have a deciduous type of dendrobium.

Some photos would really help us help you out!

It depends on the type of Dendrobium what those buds might be, they could be flowers or keikes (baby plants). Most of my nobile hybrids have bloomed on the old canes before.

It is generally the best idea to leave old canes/psuedobulbs attached to the plant as they will feed the new growth.

Many Dendrobiums bloom off the old canes as well as the new. It can be quite a nice show!

Hopefully they're buds, you'll know soon enough. Deciduous dens need a drop in nightime temps (10-15 degrees) and significantly less water and NO fertilizer during their "winter rest period". If they don't get that natural "stress" you may end up with keikes which isn't a bad thing, but they aren't blooms.

Not all of them.

Den hercoglossum, vic-reg, ceraula, Mingle's Sapphire, mohlianum. bracteosum, tanii...just a few that I grow/have grown and while they are deciduous and yes, they drop their leaves...they don't require a cooler period nor do they require a "dry rest". A little drier during winter is ok...even good if light levels are low...but certainly not dry for long periods w/any of those.

Dendrobium is a vast group of orchids and the culture requirements is nearly as varied as the plants in the group. Best to try and avoid over-generalizing culture...especially in the Den group.

I agree w/the sentiment to leave the older canes. Many will bloom time and time again on those old canes.

The Dendrobium hybrid you own is a "nobile-type" Dendrobium. This Dendrobium is in the section Dendrobium, (yep, I wrote it correctly, it's not a typo).

Those look like blooms to me. Definitely don't remove them.
