Another thing they are useful for. If you have a large chunk of natural cork, and you can't tie the orchid to it, then put the orchid and moss into a cleft/cavity, and use thin bamboo sections sharpened at the end as nails. Just hammer them in so they hold the moss firmly in place.

So, I tend to have very reactive allergic skin and my eyes have swollen shut more than once from getting something on my face to which I was allergic. As such, I am not inclined to touch the skewers to my face. What is the second best method? Make my husband touch them?

Just look at it. You will probably see whether it's light or dark, dry or damp. Just like testing a cake with a skewer to see if it's done.

I use the underside of my wrist like how you test the temperature of baby formula. I start a few inches up my wrist and roll it down towards your palm for a bigger sample size.

I have started doing this for my Odontoglossoms and I realise now they were _way_ too wet before. They look healthy enough on the surface though. Hopefully I've managed to prevent any future root rot...

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks, I saw Astrid do this in a video but wasn't quite convinced. Now I'll try skewers in my harder to tell orchids.

Do the skewers grow mold or fungus on them?

You don't need to leave them in all the time. You can take them out between checking.
