I put the Masdevallia on a south facing windowsill with some trees outside. So it's getting some sun light from time to time during the day. At night, there are CFLs above it to lighten up the room (do those lights help orchids growing, like the lights people install specific for growing orchids? a side question.).
It is mounted on a tree fern. I put it in a shallow container and put some water in it. The tree fern will absorb the water, and be wet all the time. Most of the roots are not in the water though. That's how I water it, as otherwise it becomes try too easily. I didn't see anyone else doing this yet, so hope there's nothing wrong about this practice.
Could it be the plant is still young? The seller said it's near blooming size, so I was happily surprised when I saw the spike on it. The plant is currently growing several new leaves out. It has about 18 leaves now.
