Question WHICH IS BETTER?

I have been trying to locate some Dyna-Gro K-L-N in my area and no one seems to have it in stock...but then today I see something about Superthrive. Are these chemicals similar? Are they different? Does one work better than another...I am just looking from an experience point of view at which would be the best way for me to go...because...well I want nothing but the best for my orchids.

KLN is a root stimulator and Superthrive is more of a vitamin bath...helpful when your plants are being stressed. Don't know which is "better" but what I do is add a few drops to my water when it's feeding day. I alternate between the two

I can get Superthrive in Lowe's but the KLN is not usually available locally...some hydroponics stores carry it so you might want to check around in your area. I'm waiting for a delivery from our friend Ray

Hi Zach,

This is my own opinion of course but the best fertilizer I ever used was called NATURIZE. I was headed to Wal-Mart awhile back around 2003 and was listening to the radio and they were doing a promotional thing about it at Wal-Mart in Palatka. So I bought a bag for test. Back then and still today I was growing different shrubs for Bonsai so I mixed it up and put it on the plants and it looked liked everything just exploded in about 2 weeks. The growth was incredible!!!....but sorry to say and I don’t know why Wal-Mart stopped carrying it. Since then I’ve experimented with cheaper fertilizers and more expensive ones but none of them have come close to the growth I got with Naturize. Even the so called Orchid fertilizers to me are not so great. As far as this Superthrive goes I’ve never tried it myself….it seems to be one of the biggest debates amongst plant growers some say its great others call it a snake oil…I am a big skeptic when I hear about miracle fertilizers for growing things…in the end the only way you will know for sure is to try it for yourself…I hope this helps some.

K-L-N and SuperThrive are NOT fertilizers, they are intended to be fertilizer additives.

Both contain rooting hormones. K-L-N contains both indole butyric acid (IBA) and naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), SuperThrive contains only NAA. They both contain vitamin B1, which is also a root growth stimulant.

As to the Naturize product, I am skeptical, and having read one of their patents, somewhat scared.
  • Generally speaking, nutrition is nutrition, and as long as you provide proper amounts of the correct nutrients in the correct ratios, the brand is meaningless. In general, if a fertilizer label or ad touts "years of research and independent testing", they're really telling about marketing, not science.
  • Their "bio-charged" thing is about added microorganisms that help with food availability in soil. With the way people treat their lawns and gardens with chemicals of all sorts, an occasional boost might not be a bad idea. However, while we are aware that interactions with microorganisms are what gets orchid seed to germinate in nature, there is no evidence they do anything in non-soil nutrition, especially in flower pots.
  • Their patent claims that those microorganisms are "bacteria, fungi, or viruses, or combinations thereof". Do I really want to expose my plants to that?
As an editorial comment (that may-, or may not apply here): very often, when a new "miracle" fertilizer or nutritional supplement comes about, folks try it and claim that it is fantastic, as they see bigger plants, more blooms, etc. What they fail to realize is that the novelty of the product has shifted them their old, lackadaisical, hit-or-miss feeding regimen to a regular one that is better for the plant, and it's the general application of sufficient nutrient that causes the response, not the specific one applied. I saw that happen with the MSU stuff, and while it is a good, complete fertilizer, it's not "magic".
