Cattleya

Hello;
I am new to Orchid Board. I have been growing Orchids for about 5 years now; I have been growing Phalaenopsis, Dendrobium Phals; Dendrobium Nobile, and Cattleya. I have a few of each in my collection. I am more experienced with the Phalaenopsis and have done very well with them.
I have a Cattleya that I've been growing now for a year and a half. I purchased it at an Orchid Show. It has finally decided to rebloom for me, which made me very happy, and I've been watching the buds develop normally up until now. Yesterday I noticed that the buds were taking on a different color than the day before. I started to question it, and today they are definitely looking yellow at the base of the bud. I think the buds are going to blast and I don't know what happened. The only thing that I can think of, is I have been shutting the heat register off for the night in that room in order for my Christmas Cactus to bud, which they are now loaded with flower buds. Could that temperature change have been enough to cause bud blast? The buds are still entire, they have not opened yet, so I decided to put the Cattleya in the kitchen where it will receive consistent temperature.

Not so great with Catts myself but yes I do believe if the bud developed with consistent temps it could well be that the colder temps bothered it. I've got a Catt hanging by a window and I believe the draft from the window coupled with a little more misting of the open air roots caused two pbulbs to rot. Seems the slightest things can make them sad... Plus you might look into the parentage of your plant and see if it prefers warmer temps overall... ?

I feel your Pain ! It is a long wait for our precious plants to bloom, and then when something like this happens,its so discouraging.

Orchids are very resilient, though, and this is just a wee setback.

Keep the faith, and perhaps next year, you will have flowers

It must be so annoying too see such a long-awaited bud to blast.
While plants may abort buds for various reasons, including asudden change of temperature, I doubt that is the case here. I would only blame the temperature change if it was sudden. You mentioned the room with the cactus has been kept cool for the cactus to bud. So I would think it's been kept cool for a while and the whole time, this cattleya was kept in that room developing the buds just fine up until just recently?

Hopefully, you will have a better luck next time around.

By the way, how cool do you keep your room for your cactus? 10C or lower??

I'm with NYC - I don't think the coolness of the room (unless it was quite cold, quite suddenly) is the culprit.

You did mention a heat register, has there been air blowing on the plant?

Thank you to everyone who has answered my post. Yes, the Cattleya has been in that room the entire time, so no sudden temperature changes that it wasn't used to. I don't know the exact temperature in the room but it would definitely have been above 10C. Perhaps more like 15C. The buds have definitely blasted - the stems are now yellow, and the buds are withering. Two buds and both are the same. Extremely discouraging, especially that I do not know what was the cause of the bud blast.

Sorry, I forgot to answer the question regarding heat blowing on the Cattleya. No, it was not in a position where heat was blowing on it from the heat register.
