Cymbidium flowers are stuck!
Unhappy Cymbidium flowers are stuck!

I don't know what I did but this is the first time the cymbidium made flowers. Now it's stuck!

That means that the buds have been developing for ages and now they are not advancing. They look like they are ready to pop any second but they have been like that since a month.

I have the impression the blooms are starting to look yellow- so I think they might just fall off without even opening.

ANY IDEAS? I would be so disappointed if the flowers fell off without even seeing them open!

I am adding some pics in chronological order :
1. in September
2. early October
3. today- circles show where it's starting to yellow- although I think the colours might be a little off

4. what it's supposed to look like (pics from last year)

Sometimes it just happens. I always try to watch closely and loosen any restraining tissue as the inflorescence develops, but it is easy to miss. Unfortunately, they can get so twisted that the buds are mangled. You'll just have to wait and see.

Maybe a little more light. And then just wait. It will do it..give it time.

They still look ok to me. I do like tarev's 'a little more light' suggestion though. Good luck.

In September/October Cymbidiums like to stay outside and appreciate the cooler nights. With cooler temps the speed of growth slows down. Remember that in wintertime Cymbidium flowers can last several months, which made them valuable cut flowers.
I also assume that your plant looks good, but the switch from growth to rest might be stressful in some years.
Btw your plant looks strong and well grown.

Dunno if I should post at all since I don't have any Cyms but have you changed any part of your care since it started spiking? I had this happen with a Paph (very diff I know) and I suspected it was due to a lack of proper watering on my part. Now I have an Oncid that is sick with something, I cut it up (in so many words) and the lowest two buds have turned purple (flower color) and are more full while the very last small one, still developing, just blasted. This plant I know has been kept too dark as I've kept it isolated and in ICU so to speak. When it was first sick - pbulb turning light brown, leaf dying, brown spreading - it was in front of slider window and got good light, buds kept growing fine. Now diff place, less light, slowed development, less water too...

Keep us posted. Without any Cym experience, it does look really good!

well i don't think I've changed anything...it's right next to the window where it's been all summer long. That window was partially open during the summer and most of September. Now it's too cold and I closed the window although I haven't turned on the heating so it's still much colder in that room.

I took the picture again without flash and I think you can see the change in color better now ---you can see it's turning yellow.

It is possible that it is a yellow Cymbidium and what you are seeing is the flower color? It looks healthy to me.

Don't worry about it..it is just pacing itself..I have some photos here of my noid mini-cym in Feb 2011, as it was getting ready to bloom indoors.

I'd say at this stage, the bud was ripening to open..turned yellow 03Feb

then starts opening in 06 Feb

a little more in 08 Feb..see it is not yellow but pink after all

So your cym is almost there! Just be very, very patient. Your buds are "ripening" So excited for you! I'd say maybe within this week or next week you will see your blooms.
