I believe everyone has had problems with rotten roots. I noticed on orchid you-tube presentations and on my own plants that roots outside the pot look much healthier and never seem to rot. I am goint to try to force two or three plants to grow their roots out of the pot, mounted orchids seem to thrive.
I would be interested in opinions!

Most orchids in nature are epiphytes, so roots grow naturally outside, hanging on to the trees, getting a lot of breeze, moisture from Mother Nature on and off. That is why those aerial roots really seem happier doing so. That is their natural way of growing.

It is just being grown in containers like most of us do since most of us do not have the ideal location, or set-up or conditions or time to water and grow them mounted.

Often, what I notice is a lot of people are too engrossed about the watering aspect, oftentimes, forgetting the need of the plant to get good air circulation at the root zone and all over. Using the wrong containers in the process, no drainage or soaking the roots far too long. So the roots are the first to go. They need air AND moisture. I have observed that a lot with my Phals, so now I am giving them a lot of breathing space at the root zone. They are liking it. Of course, as seasons change, adjusting the amount of watering.

And if you grow Phals, you will notice, the plant naturally will find a way to raise its other end, so it is tilting to the side of the container..it really showed me it does not like being too deep in the container..let it get its air. Same with Dens..don't put them deep..need air.

So good luck on your plans! The 'chids will surely feel free!

Perhaps you are over-watering ...
I like to use a small over-turned net pot in the center, or tuck some styro into the center of the root mass - helps media to dry more evenly, and the roots like the nice air pocket

Syrup? Is this a case of attack of the auto-correct? Just wondering.
