When do Phals start spikes
All my orchids were outside for about four weeks this fall 50 degr. at night. Is that enough to make Phals spike?
Two have a new spike started off an old one.

usually most phals are already in spike on or before thanksgiving granted that they are healthy and established plants.

You should be looking if you're a "peeker" like me. I have some that sneak up on me but I usually catch them when they are nubbins! Any time now....you'll start to see little "mittens"!

October 9th has been the magic day for me two years in a row. Three of my eight had spikes starting that day, the other five are still 'undecided' I guess...

Phal spiking season has started, and I see new spikes from early october all the way to the end of the year.
usually there's no need to put them outside, the temperature variation indoors in the fall is usually more than enough to induce blooming.

Once the plant has been exposed to a period of sufficiently-cooler growing temperatures, spike should start to show up about 6- to 8 weeks later.

I have 2 of my Phals that are currently in spike. Now is the season! So keep checking them regularly. If you're like me you'll check them in the morning, grab a cup of joe and then check again to see if the caffeine opened your eyes more

That's exactly how I noticed that my Phal. lueddemanniana had not 1, but 3 spikes growing. My sleepy eyes saw only 1 at first.... They're just nubbins, so still lots of waiting to do!

I know they are supposed to come out under the second leaf. Why does beeing an orchid enthusiast make one so impatient?

They say not to move your orchids once they start to spike so your stem will grow straight and not twist. Congrats to everyone that has spikes now on their Phals.
