What does Borax do? I know you can use plaster of paris with rats, and it cooks them internally.

It kills them ^^ More clearly it attacks their digestive parts.

And any cockroach eating at the dead one will die too. No resistance issue.

Now in the US I know some cockroaches have developed an aversion to sugar so a sugar based bait won't work, hence the flour alternative.

I'm currently trying the plaster/sugar bait with my little "friends", and if I've yet to see dead bodies, there's less of them already. The effect showed up in a few days. Plus, the bait brings out adults, so it's easier to crush them.

A little feedback on my baits plaster/sugar, it's eaten ok, I've crushed a few bugs with clearly their inside plastered. No dead bodies though… But way less cockroaches since and they seem younger and younger.

It's difficult to tell the size of the population remaining anyway, we only see few bugs of the total population. And anyway for me it'll be an eternal fight as the whole (huge) building is totally infested. But at least I can limit the population in the flat to a low level I can live with.

I must find some borax… ^^

I've lately had some problems with roaches munching on new orchid roots, especially the expensive orchids. I bought some boric acid crystals yesterday and I've heard that it should be mixed with sugar/flour and in here I saw plaster of Paris. Now I'm confused in what ratio I should mix it. Please help on this as I don't like to use insecticides for many reasons.

Not sure. At this site here, it reckons 50-50 mix of flour and borax.
