Cym growths - Orchid Board

2 noID cyms I got this summer... one with the purplish spike came like that (there is actually 2 on the same plant but couldn't get a good picture of the smaller one). whatever that growth may be its seems well and truly stalled. The other has this small green growth, do you think this is new growth or beginning of a spike?

Too early to tell, I guess it's new growth.

The first photo shows a new growth which has apparently rotted out. Although there might be a touch of green at the tip (hard to tell), the rest of the growth appears dessicated.

The second photo shows the beginning of a healthy new growth, even though the plant appears severely stressed possibly due to rotted roots.

So is there anything I can do to help them get over the trauma ( they came from homedepot so it's pretty much inevitably a rescue situation) the stalled growths still feel firm so i've been letting them alone. do cyms only bloom/grow roots on new growth like catts?

I would repot it in fresh mix now, even though it is late in the season and get rid of the rotten roots, which Home Depot is famous for creating due to too much water while awaiting sale.

If you send me a PM with an addy I can attach a pdf file to, I will see send you a copy of the Repotting Guide used by the Gold Coast Cym Growers Branch of the Cym Society of America. It should answer all your questions with a step-by-step procedure.

They have been re-potted since I got them the mix is coir/ spag ( i know some people hate spag but it does well for me) The larger of the 2 (with the green growth) was in the worst shape. he's now propped up since he dosent seem to have enough root to support itself . do you still think i should repot having just done so within the last 2-3 months or should I let them adapt? I'm hesitant to move them again and cause more stress.

I cannot believe coir/spag works with your Cyms, but I have heard of worse mixes that work under the conditions of an owner. If you say it works for you, then let it be.

No, I would not repot again now, but next spring I would seriously consider moving the plant to a mix with better aeration. Just do not overwater it this winter as the mix you are using holds water forever but if allowed to dry out, is almost impossible to rewet.
