an accidental spray of systemic weedkiller will solve it quite discretely.

Do you get many grapes?

NO grapes at all. We keep cutting it out of the fence and tree and anything else it decides to climb. I hate the thing.

Cntry, Turn a negative into a positive. Grapevine wood is great for mounting orchids among other things. You may even be able to get rid of some of it to your orchid growing friends!!

Judi, Thanks that sounds like a good Idea. I recently started growing orchids so the vine may work for the orchids when I need them. I will keep that in mind for next year.

Figs trees only fruit on new growth every year. It's recommended to prune them back heavily in order to get fruit. Plus then you can keep them to a manageable size.

Oh yes, it gets hacked back regularly or I wouldn't be able to reach the fruit! Plus, I have a plastic owl on a pole, so that the birds won't eat all the fruit. My neighbours have huge trees, but never get any figs to eat. The starlings come round in huge flocks stripping every tree except mine.

*nods* My father in law has the same problem with his blueberries and gooseberries. He has to be faster than the birds in order to get any fruit. For us, the squirrels would be greedy and eat all the figs before they were even ripe!

Here we have no squirrels, oddly (south Spain) but the rats are very arboreal, and have the disconcerting habit of watching you from the trees at times.
