Stopped at the orchid greenhouse yesterday and admired an orchid that looked a bit like this! It immediately caught my eye...and it smelled wonderful! <3

Worth the $40 price tag, but I lack the space right now. Tell me they arent too difficult to grow! And that I can have one some day, without a greenhouse...

I keep my zygo's in my bedroom window.
Bright light. Moist.
Never let it get sopping wet or dry.

They are space hogs.

Do they flower once a year? How long do the flowers last?

Zygos are one of the most rewarding genera to grow. If you select the right hybrid/species, you will have an incredible fragrance for several weeks of bloom. Since they bloom on the new growths, if you have a healthy plant putting up several new growths in a season, your plant will bloom several times a year.

As far as culture, I treat them the same and keep them outside with my Cyms all year long here in Northern California. The only thing you have to watch for is water sitting on the leaves in cool winter weather when unattractive black spots may occur. It does not bother the plant health but certainly not attractive. As with Cyms, protect from freezing temps.

I grow Zygos too. Love them so much! When I first got them in bloom, I placed them indoors by my west facing window. After the blooms fell, I repotted and saw just how actively growing the roots are. It is a bit of a space hog due to its big leaves.

Eventually I found a way to grow it outdoors, inside my growcamp. It gets frequent watering in my area, since it is very dry here and we go into triple digit temps during summer. I get my blooms during Spring, and it stays in my growcamp now year round, since I can always pull down the plastic foil to protect it during some awkward hard freeze nights during winter.

I treat this plant like an Oncidium, loves water a lot. Too bad the leaves, it just gets those specks..but I have learned to live with it..it is what it is.

So what are some int- warm temperature tolerant compact hybrids that smell like the typical zygo? I've always wanted to grow these but I grow under lights and need short plants that can take the heat from my t5s
