The rules are meant to protect their agriculture. Already, they are dealing with Greening disease, a bacterial infection that kills citrus trees (it is causing Florida grief, too). There are so many viruses, pests, fungus and bacterial diseases that can easily wipe out various crops. If you are a chocolate lover or enjoy coffee, right now, various diseases are really causing problems with both of these crops where they grow. It is unfortunate that we do not do more to protect our agricultural crops.

Other states also have regulations regarding import of plants, fruits, animals.

In most cases it is to prevent the introduction of pests that can devastate crops - but also disease, and invasive non-native species.

I remember a time (in the 80s), when an invasive moth species (whose larvae devasted crops) became prevalent in California - there were road stops at county borders to ensure that no fruit or plants were being transported.

My orchids and I made it to San Diego! I took the I-8, where there was a checkpoint where everyone had to stop. The agent asked me (while standing about 8 feet from my vehicle) if i had any fresh produce. I said, "no," and was on my way. :-)

My orchids seem to be doing well after the 4 day road trip. A leaf on one of my phals was slightly injured when a shoe box fell on it, but it'll survive.

Thanks again for everyone's input.

I am glad ALL of you made it safely back to San Diego. I also hope the orchids will like their new home there. Let us know how they adapt to everything. Best of luck.
