Life throws some challenges our way. Wishing you and your parents all the best. Thank you for all the great advice. I wish I had a greenhouse and not just a cement slab.

James...just want you to know that I wish you the best with your folks and with your orchids! I take care of my elderly parents (they live with me) and now my father in law is on Hospice so I try to help him, too. As you say...a season of life! Right now I have 50-60 orchids and they are good therapy for me, but the time it takes to water them and keep the pests at bay sometimes makes me wonder if I should just give them up! I am not sure I would have the courage to start over as you have.
As many others have said, I am grateful for your posts and your advice. Thanks for being willing to share your experience with us all.

Thank you all. For those of you who also care for your elderly folks, remember that it is a blessing. Sometimes in disguise but a blessing none the less. When they are gone...... As for orchids, I have given away and sold more than I could ever remember. If you have them, keep them if you can. Orchids have seasons too. But they give so much in so many ways. It is us who need to find what they offer.

Sometimes it is the small and seemingly inconsequential that bring wonder and beauty. Silly analogy but in the movie "The Last Samari" the great ronan lord kept looking for that single cherry bloom which was perfect. Too late in the end he understood finally that they are all beautiful. The same with orchids. A pain sometimes but so beautiful when seen with the inner eye. Our emotions.

James, I wish you and your parents all of the best. Your last statements are so true! My grandmother lived with my family from the time I was in middle school until I moved out. The experience shaped so much of the person I have become, as my grandma was a victim of aphasia due to a stroke (she couldn't speak since I was in the third grade), so for all of those years I could never have a conversation with her where she spoke back, but like the orchid flower you described, I knew how kind and generous her spirit was even if she couldn't express it. She had such an impact that my first child is named after her.
I hope you find your collection a great home. And if you are ever in the Metro Detroit area send me a p.m. , we can do coffee and I can introduce you to a wonderfully interesting grower in this area. Take care!

Your wise words and sentiments ring true. Thank you for reminding and sharing them with us. The time and effort I put into my Orchids has grown exponentially but so have the rewards...even if a little bit slower. I have to say I always appreciated/admired how much you like watching Orchids grow and rescuing them. I think too that seeing them grow is sometimes more exciting than the flowers!

It is all the different aspects of growing orchids that is the wonder. I concur with your sentiments. The flower lasts but a short time in the long life of an orchid. I always loved to watch them start growing again when they were almost dead. Such wonder in such complex chemistry.
