Isn't a dend. Unicum in same class, a nobile? Mine was in bloom when i bought it 3 months ago. Not only did it lose leaves but some stems became loose and were easily taken off. I had it in a plastic pot and spaghnum. I moved it yesterday into clay with bark. Maybe i overwatered?

Yes, growths late in season is strange, but as long as there are some that grew in season, you will always see them flower.

I hope to see yours in bloom in spring.
Fancy Yellow sounds amazing!
I used to have a variety called Canary Yellow Song.
They might or might not be the same stuff.
Yes, I hope so too. This is my first Nobile, and I really wanted to experience its flower power. I bought 2 Nobiles from the same vendor, one died because it was in a flimsy pot and sitting on my balcony. One very hot and windy day, the pot tipped over and the balcony cement literally cooked the poor nobile. It was Oriental Smile, which I was soooooo looking forward to seeing it bloom.

By the way, I do want to purchase more Nobiles in the future, where do you get yours? Do you get yours from Yamamotos?

Default Dendrobium Nobiles putting out flower spike?!?!?!

I just noticed this morning aside from the fact my dendrobium nobiles is putting out new shoots in August, now I have 3 tiny buds forming on the old canes!!! Now I am convinced this nobiles does not want to grow according to mother nature's rules. Can anyone tell me if these are in fact flower buds?! Many thanks!

I get mine from a few different sources, but mostly local. they all have a label saying they are from Yamamoto.

I think buying directly from Yamamoto is also good.
The price should at least be the best because you are cutting the middleman out.
Also, you get the variety you want.

Only a handful of many Yamamoto dendrobiums are available else where.

Regarding the photos, the first one is definitely a keiki, or so it looks to me.
The second one is too early to tell, but most likely a keik given the time of the year, unless you had some super cool nights recently.

Either way, time will tell, right?

I have Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' from Yamamoto.
It has been with me for a few years now.
It does not bloom well anymore because I cannot provide enough cooling and the plant is huge! I need to chop it down. lol

Now I am really bummed. I was hoping for some early flowers

I wonder what I did wrong.... I followed Yamamoto's directions. Full sun, water daily, fertilize until end of July. And I am preparing it for winter rest come end of October. I live in SoCal so it would still be hot until then.

Interesting. I bought a soft cane Dendrobium a couple of months ago, and it was in the last stages of its flowering. There were a couple of keikis on it, but I left them to grow their roots, and gave it a regime of 20-20-20 onces a week and plain water once a week, fertilising weakly, weekly.

I figured that it would, with luck flower next year.

Then, after a while, I noticed it breaking into a rash of keikis, so I harvested the 4 with roots, and watched to see what would happen.

To my surprise, it seems that several of these keikis are bearing 2 flowers with the one at the top of the cane having 4.

Are they prone to having more than one flush of flowers, or is it just that its relocation has upset it?

Re the question at the beginning of the thread, everywhere I have seen this question asked, they say, water it according to its growth. If there are shoots and new growth, then water.

Well, early flower for nobile would be more like around December.
This is not a flowering time unless you had some cold nights. Even then, it takes a few weeks of cold night, not just a few days according to Yamamoto website.

You have not done anything wrong.

Their normal flowering time will be spring.

Plants can do odd things at times, but these orchids take the cool night temperature as a cue to set flower buds.

Have you had some cool evenings in your area recently??

I hear people in North West of USA report their nobile hybrids sometimes bloom during the summer when evenings are cool.
So these are definitely temperature sensitive.

Yes, water a lot while growing. reduce a little bit when the fall approaches or growth stops.
Some say no water for the entire winter. I find that unbelievable, only if you want to kill or shrivel up your plants. lol

I water enough to maintain the plump canes at all times.

Well, the temps here are only just sliding towards autumn. Over the past month or so the max min temp has been 35 - 15C

My white dendrobium in the other pot isn't showing any bloom tho. Just the Lai's new Yukidarium (white with purple heart). Also, it has keikis that flower, while the white one just flowers on the canes.

For certain varieties, 15 C is cool enough.
One hybrid that is very sensitive to a slight temperature drop is Dendrobium Fancy Angel 'Lycee'/
It is very pretty white/soft pink with subtle yellow throat and very popular hybrid from Yamamoto.
