Which is more fragrant, Bellina or Samera? Male
Default Which is more fragrant, Bellina or Samera?

Hey everyone, I’m in the market for some fragrant orchids from hausermann. Which is more fragrant, the Phal Bellina, Phal Violacea var. borneo (also called Samera), or the Phal. violacea (Malaysian crosses)? Any information would be very helpful as I have never owned any of them.

Would also appreciate any info on any new purchases from Hausermans.

Thanks

Phal Bellina is said to be the most fragrant but I, also, have never seen any of these in bloom.

You can't go wrong with any of the three but if I could have just one I prefer a violacea

Samera is a primary hybrid between bellina and violacea so you could have the best of both parents. I have a couple of different Samera and it has a great scent.

As Brooke said, you can't go wrong with any of those.
I too prefer violacea, its scent reminds me of Big Red gum and alot of its hybrids do as well.
If you'd prefer a sweet lemony scent go with bellina.
Samera could be either scent or a combo of the two.

I was just at Hausermann's on Monday and they do have a magnificent display of violacea and bellina. Scent is a personal thing but I preferred the malaysian scent on these.

Just a note - in terms of Hausermann cataloguing:

Violacea var borneo - Phal Bellina
Orchids By Hausermann: Phal. (violacea var. borneo x violacea var borneo) IN BUD

Violacea var borneo x var malaysian = Phal Samera
Orchids By Hausermann: Phal. violacea (Malaysia x var. Borneo)

They did have a couple of malaysia only crosses - some didn't have nice colour, very washed out.

Thank you all for that great information. I think I will buy the Phal Bellina first, then Phal Samera.

I have a Phal. Samera coerulea seedling with 2 blooms currently. I think they have an amazing fragrance. Especially in the morning! I post a pic as soon as I have enough post. Still very new
