Please, as Sonya has said both sides of the argument have been given, let's just walk away. Unless there is something new to say I ask that everyone drop it.
We've had some complaints about this thread, so let's just congratulate Skycat on a spike

Skycat that's awesome and so gratifying!
I have twin keikis I potted up this spring. One of them grew a spike - my first homegrown spike! - this summer with only two buds albeit but then it started growing a third bud while the blooms wilted one at a time. Meanwhile its brother grew a new leaf and now that one is in spike!! All of these plants, including the mother Phal, sit next to each other by an east window. The mother hasn't spiked but has grown a new leaf and tons of roots!
My first rebloom of a Phal is just now taking place on a rescue that has been outside for months. Different conditions but happy spikes! So great job, I know it's no easy task finding what makes your specific orchid happy. There is no absolute science with these guys.

In the very beginning of my growing, I relied on all the "papers". It is what got me started. However, what most PhDs do not seem to understand is a basic principle of plant life and the reason we still have plants in our midst: There is IDEAL, and there is TOLERABLE. The range from the midpoint of IDEAL to the ends of TOLERABLE is quite large. I would advise beginners who have the basics under their belt to toss the "papers" and just grow. Seriously.
