I always swing by the Morgue at Lowes. I just enjoy nurturing them back from the dead. Sometimes, I use them for experimental purposes. I find them to be valuable learning experiences.
It's amazing how well they do and how quickly they do it when you mount them....feed them kelp and slather them down in a fungicide. (Not necessarily in that order)
Then once they are all better, I observe the bloom, decide if I want to keep it and if I don't, I either give it away or haul it off for the auction table at our society. The mounted ones go fast.

I know the manager of the gardening section in my local walmart (in fact I know at lest 80% of the people who work in my local walmart, lol) the last time I was in there and he was in there I said to him, you need to water your plants for sale more often. He just looked at me...I said can't you hear them screaming? I can! then I walked off I know a good exit line when I say it!
Neither of my orchids have been rescues, but I'm sure I will have some that are. I don't have a lowes near enough to me to always check on the 'dead table' (i love that term btw) but when we go to lowes I always look at the garden supply area. It's the only place I found orchid pots!

I really like the selection of pots and orchid supplies at Lowe's, I just wish they could learn how to take care of their plants. I've had rescues from them but they were healthy. These are so sunburned that the leaves are practically solid white. An entire shipment of African violets was ruined as well. Two Cattleyas with fungal spots on the leaves and wilted flowers were on sale at full price, I just got a little upset to see beautiful plants ruined through neglect by a vendor. I did write my letters (customer service and garden center manager at my local Lowe's, hope it makes a difference in the way then handle their plants in the future. Thanks for the reply, have a great day!

Lowes is where I found the correct potting medium and the type of pots I wanted for my orchids. RIght now, I have two, and that's about my limit. Unless I see one I like, then I might end up with three, but I have no where to put a 3rd one. I keep mine in my bathroom window, on the east side of the hosue, they get good light and an excellent amount of humidity. I really think they do so well becuase they are just above the toilet, and that has to be higher humidity!

I'd love to meet you for coffee if you come to Spokane, James! Will you be coming at around the time of the local OS's show in March?

March maybe. More like june. It depends on how my new van project is coming along. I also have to stop by The Obsidian Buttes to get some more obsidian to make more knives and arrows. I love to stop by and meet folks I've known over the internet. I've met 100's of photographers through the years. Now I meet orchideers.

If you're driving, just make it June. The passes around this part of the country are still dangerous and unpredictable in the spring.

Two's my limit, that's what they all say! I said one was my limit years ago and now have 4 Cattleyas and 10 Phals! If you have other windows in your house and I'm assuming that you do, you can set up some shelves or use plant stands, some people even put orchids in hanging baskets. I have some of those inexpensive snap together plastic bookshelves that work well and there are always grow lights. Personally, I wouldn't keep plants in the bathroom you might accidentally knock your orchid into the toilet, but everyone does what works best for them. I live in a pretty dry climate and have not found humidity to be that big of a deal. You can do pebble trays or run a small room humidifier once in a while. Have a great day!

Non phal shipments at Lowes also includes within 2 weeks of Valentines day and Mothers day.
These days I will buy a phal rarely. I want those roots to be awesome if I do. Saving dendrobiums and catts is more of a sure thing for me. Recently I've gotten a few nice bromiliads too. Now I have succulents, orchids, epiphitic cactii, and bromiliads. Most if not all gotten at 1/2 price.
