I am about a year into being an orchid fancier. I am looking for a really good organic fertilizer. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks

Paul

Why do you want organic? Few if any fertilizers worth their price are organic.

I've used Merrill's Compost Tea from Merrill's Organics. It's basically composted chicken manure with some other additives. It worked fine but there's two considerations. First it's difficult to know how much nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium your giving the plant because organic nutrients can vary in strength. Secondly most of the nitrogen from organic fertilizer is in the form of urea. Urea is difficult for orchids to utilize although they probably do get some benefit from it. There are several other organic compost teas available online. If your interested, you should experiment with them and see what kind of results you get. I no longer use it but I did for a couple of years.

I am experimenting with blood meal and bone meal. However this is only on my orchids summered outdoors. Everything seems fine so far. As for indoors - very weak solution, every 2nd week - of alternated brand fertilizers.
I haven't seen any organic fertilizers for indoor use.
It will be interesting to see if someone finds, or recommends one...

oops...saw the Tucker post. That stuff looks interesting
Products - Merrill's Organics
will have to search up the N,P, K ratio

Found this stuff - I am going to try it instead of buying more fertilizer. Hope it doesn't stink
http://www.amazon.com/Buffaloam-Orga...mpost+tea+bags

- I cancelled this order, going to try Chickity PooPoo

Here's another, though I have not tried it nor would I be able to recommend it. Note near the bottom of the page this does have an assay report which describes the different elements in ppm which are found in the formula. This concoction is advertised as "organic" so take it from there. I don't think plants actually use several of the trace elements listed in the assay report, so I would consider that mostly overkill, though most fertilizers, whether "organic" or not (what the heck is "organic", precisely? [Rhetorical question]), probably contain some of these metals and other elements.

looks impressive and a glowing review ! Problem is that bottle is what you use ( no mix with water ). Last for 3 "waterings" with my collection...

I know. That review came directly from Amazon. I think this is "designer" orchid food...

I found another, which does say it can be used indoors, though it doesn't specifically say it is for use with orchids. (I'd be willing to place a few granules on the surface of the media on a couple of test plants. Might do them good, though I would only use indoors if there was no smell whatsoever... )

Chickity-Doo-Doo
7 pounds package, resealable
A high quality OMRI (Organic Materials Review Institute) listed organic fertilizer
5-3-2 N.P.K. formulation
Has highest nitrogen (5%) of any available product in it's class
Ideal for flowers, vegetable gardens and indoor planting
Derived from 100% layer hen manure
Contains 9% calcium
100% weed free
No fillers or additives

(I actually think this is interesting. I had not seen this until I started Googling for organic fertilizer. Most of the nitrogen is probably in the form of urea.)

the Chickity stuff is available at my Menards for $8.99 - 25 lbs ! At that price its worth getting as if it does stink, I can still use it on my vegetable garden.
Thanks for that find !
