why my orchids stopped growing?
Question why my orchids stopped growing?

I have 3 orchids that seem to have stopped growing, but neither of them look dead:

1. An Aliceara type I got about 2 months ago. I potted it in bark mix, but nothing changed since then -- no new roots, no new leaf, and the old leaves on it still look green as it came in.

2. A Den. Aggregatum I repotted into s/h culture a month ago. Before repotting, it was growing new roots and new shoots, and afterwards, it stopped growing, and everything looks the similar like 1 month ago.

3. A Phal that has been flowing for 7 months now. Nothing changed for the past 2-3 months, except that one leaf on the bottom turned yellow and fell off. Other than that, no new roots, no new leaves, the opened flowers stay the same for 2-3 months, looking fresh, no fade or wilting, and little tiny new flower buds stay in the same size.

Is there anything not quite to cause these, such as water, light, temp.? Or could this be natural process?

Thanks for your help! I just started growing orchids, so don't have experience with any of this pattern yet.

The phal isn't going to grow new roots or leaves while it's blooming, at least, not in the way that it would if it were not in bloom. So it's not surprising to see no new growth from that plant.

As for the den... as I understand it, S/H has a transition period of several weeks for new root growth to begin, maybe someone else here can explain that one for you. I don't use this method and am not very familiar with it.

And the Aliceara (now Beallara if I have that right), I'm not sure why it wouldn't be growing at least a little something at this time of year. All of my oncidium and brassia hybrids are throwing up new pbulbs or are in bloom right now. My guess would be, not enough water or not enough fertilizer, or not enough light. Can you please post a picture of this plant?

There may be periods of little to no visible growth.

If the beallara is full grown, but not flowering, it will wait awhile before pushing new growth. Phals have a tendency to stall at times. Nothing to worry about. The den is probably doing the same.

Well, the Dendrobium aggregatum has a distinct wet/dry period during the year. As a result, it only does one set of growth per year, mine was done within two months. If the new growths looks done it's likely that it will produce no more new growth until next spring/summer.

Could we get pictures?

If the Dendrobium aggregatum is being grown in the northern hemisphere, then this is the wrong time of year for it to go dormant. They go dormant during the winter.

It is "taking a break". Plants grow in spurts just like people do when they are growing.
