I totally love lava as a medium. Cattleyas love it. Now that I see your neo in it, I have hopes about getting one. If it loves lava, I can grow it!

I have read SO much about Lava Rock lately. So many people seem to be using it with great success.

Optimist....do you just use straight Lava? Nothing else?

I think I'd like to try it. Do you soak it?

Jr...your Neo is BEAUTIFUL! I'm so excited for you! Can't wait to see it too! (You are going to post pics when it blooms....right? )

There are different types of lava rock out there. There is the solid lava rock that has no poer spaces and there are the lava cinder which has lots of pore space ala swiss cheese. I find the lava cinder to be an excellent substrate for potting orchids of all types. Here...

I use lava and love it. I get mine from Home Depot. It's the landscape lava...out where they have the rocks and sand. Very inexpensive...nice mix of sizes in one bag. Just be sure to rinse well and don't do it in a sink in the house as the sediment could clog up pipes. I use an old colander and rinse it outside.

The neo is looking great. Good growing!!

It's beautiful and you have every right to be excited. I know I'm always ecstatic to see any orchid I've bloomed for the first time.

Well, if they turn out disappointing then I'm not so excited about that but your beautiful neo is something to be very please about. Good job!
