Default Mini phal confusion

I'm taking a look at this mini phal today (deliciosa x chibae) because I was concerned about root rot (there were some bad roots). I've noticed this before but now with repotting I'm bemused about what to do- what is the extra leaf growth off to the side? If I try to seat the main crown appropriately, it buries those leaves a bit too much.

If it were mine, I'd just set it on top of some moist sphagnum, and let the plant decide how it wants to grow. Make sure you have really good humidity levels and really good air circulation. It should recover, even with the little root structure it has left.

The picture is a bad angle- there is actually a pretty decent root system there. I'm more concerned that if I seat the main crown that offshoot of leaves will be sort of buried, and if I leave those above the top line the crown will be too high. I just don't know why those leaves grew off the side like that.

It's a basal keiki, just pot up on an angle and the plant should do fine.

Oh, fun. So I don't do anything special with it. Thanks!

I agree with Bulbofett - make a small mound of sphagnum, and place the plant on top, maybe "snugged down" into it a slight bit. That way, both plants will be fine.

Pot it up in some moss with both at an even angle. The plant will compensate and grow evenly. That basal keiki isn't old enough to go on it's own yet. I would just pot normally with both at the same attitude in the pot.

I don't have any quality moss. I already potted it yesterday in a fine bark/perlite/charcoal mix. They are at the same angle. I had just cut the two spikes right before taking the picture. I need to order some good moss- the only thing around here is the really bad quality stuff and I've tried to use it and failed miserably. I'm still very unsure of myself with moss- I think I need to try it out with a healthy plant.

Try looking at a hydroponics store or pet store for moss. Rocket J. Squirrel showed some he got at a pet store and I found the same stuff at Petmart. Really good stuff. Moss is easy as long as you don't pack into the pot too tightly. That was my original mistake with moss.
