I've recently come into possession of a vanilla orchid. It's small now (maybe like 8 inches long? and in a 3" pot, and also it's leaning against a small stake), but I've found out that it is a vine that gets very long. How soon before I will have to give it extra support, and about how long should I expect it to be by the time I have to bring it inside for the fall/winter?
Mine was growing about the same until I put it in a south window and now its growing like crazy, I would give it extra support right away, they can get long fast, I'm not sure when to bring it in, mine has never been out side, I'm sure some one else can help you with that.
Wow, based on responses I am wondering what I am doing wrong with mine. While it grows, it's certainly not about a foot per month. This is my second year with it and it's grown maybe a few inches. During winter it's directly under grow lights in the basement, but currently hanging outside with the Vandas. Last year I kept it more shaded and wondered if that was in error so am testing.
The first year I had mine it really didn't grow much. Very slowly.
After that though it really took off.
I also increased the light and water slightly. And misted a whole lot more. Only orchid I own that appreciates being drenched in mist several times a day.
I hear with higher humidity than I have they grow about a meter a month!
