Purple color underneath phalaenopsis.
Default Purple color underneath phalaenopsis.

I got this pula for my birthday, the last bloom just fell off so I re potted using bark. This is my first orchid so I though the purple color was normal until I started reading about he causes so my question is is it normal or am I exposing it to too much light??? Also how do the roots look, does it have chances of doing well after repotting?

Thank you!!

you are fine. Leaf burn is usually on the tops of the leaves, not the undersides.
Many people say that the purple underside indicates that the blooms are pink/red. What was the colour of yours ? I am experimenting with that theory at the moment. I have seedlings with green leaf undersides, and others with purple. Interested in eventually seeing the bloom colours and whether the theory holds true. Maybe others can chime in.

I find my DTPS phals have purple under the leaves. My phal-phals are a lighter green with no purple. They both get the same light amounts. The DTPS also has dark purple flower spike but the flowers are yellow and dark purple. I have another that is also purple under the leaves and that is a purple colored dtps. Intrestingly, the first one I mentioned also has purple to red root tips when growing. The light green phals have green and white root tips. So I think it is just a genetic issue. Even with the Catts, some get more purple on the leaves than others.

I think your pot is a bit large. Make sure when you water that you let it dry to the center. Maybe use a bamboo skewer to check if it is still wet. A smaller pot would dry out quicker.

I've seen some different colorations on Phal leaves too, especially the newer leaves. Your uppermost leaf looks pretty young yet. I've got a plant that was dyed blue so I don't know what the real flowers look like though the name on the plastic pot was 'Pink Pirate' but its new leaf came in sort of mottled. A new mini Phal (Dtps) I just got in bloom - light/pale yellow flowers, really cute - (orchidsarefun you'll like this) that have a little bit of freckling (dots) on them, just a little and mostly the newest one, but these leaves are light with a yellow/red color.

Also I have a seedling, well big, that has rather dark leaves all around, sort of a dark red/dark green. Its roots are also a dark reddish-brown.

The pigmentation is nothing to worry about.

The purple pigmentation doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the color of the Phal's flowers.

Yeah, nothing to worry about. It is normal.
I find many phals have leaves with that purple underside. My semi alba (pure white flower with red lip) purchase has always been like that.

Thank you all! Now I much more relieved I thought I was doing something wrong. This particular orchid had pink almost purple blooms, again thanks I'm learning how to not kill them as I go along

Hi!

Congrats on yr first orchid! Celebrate the learning curve it is heady and fun! Also, infinite!

That plant, IF it is a pink, especially dark pink, looks fine re the underleaf tint.

Can you share what directional exposure you get in that window? You may also wanna back the plant off some from the glass if the exposure is Southern.

Make sure yr new Phal grows in decent humidity when possible (alas, indoors, it isn't always possible) and they do love good air movement.
